Request for Proposals: A History of Duke University Medical Center and Health System

Background: Duke University Medical Center and Health System have become nationally and internationally renowned leaders in patient care, research, and education. As DUMC/DUHS approaches its 75th anniversary, we need to capture the rich history of the growth and development of this premiere institution, including the role of many leaders in expanding and enhancing its core mission.

Parameters of the Book

Content: The book will be a history of Duke University Medical Center and Health System (DUMC/DUHS), describing the environment that stimulated its creation, and tracing the development and growth of the institution to its present standing. The acceptable manuscript will place Duke University Medical Center's achievements within the context of the business, political, social, scientific and health care developments of the time that affected the institution's course. The book will focus on the years not covered by previous histories. It is also important that the book address the role of the Duke family and its continuing importance in the Medical Center and DUMC/DUHS involvement in the local Durham community.

A publisher (e.g., a university press or self publication) will be sought for this book by DUMC; while the involvement of the author will be important in the process, the author will not be responsible for securing a publisher.

Style: The book should be objective, historically accurate, and well researched and illustrated. The book should be conversational in tone, engaging to the lay reader with a limited knowledge of the medical world and written to capture the institution's personality and culture.

Timetable: The book must be completed to the satisfaction of the DUMC Administrative steering committee within 28 months of the execution of a contract. As part of the contract, a 2,500 to 5,000 word historical overview will be written by the author by December 1, 2004 for use in a brochure by DUMC during its 75th anniversary. With the approval of the editorial committee, scholarly articles concerning the history of DUMC/DUHS also may be submitted to journals by the author during the period of the contract.

Resources: The author will have reasonable access to all DUMC faculty and staff, historical records housed in the Medical Center Library, Archives, and other departments, and the assistance of the Library staff, archivist and staff in other areas of the institution. The author will not have access to data in any patient charts, the official personnel records of present or former members of the faculty and staff, or records deemed of a confidential nature.

Office space and computer equipment will be provided within the Medical Center Library. Additional space will be available in the Medical Center Archives for research and use of archival documents. Additional support will be provided for related supplies, oral history transcription, and other expenses.

The position of historian may be treated on a contract basis or become a temporary full-time employee of Duke University for the duration of the project. This will be negotiated with the final candidate.

Role of the Steering Committee: The steering committee of the history will select the author and monitor progress via regular meetings with the author. The committee chair and/or members will be available for advice and consultation with the author when needed.

The committee will approve the theme, general direction and proposed outline of contents for the book. As details emerge, the committee will review and approve drafts of the contents and chapters, and review and give final approval of the manuscript.

Copyright: Duke University will hold the copyright to the history, as a work made for hire. Duke University reserves the right to reproduce the book as a whole or in part in any medium, but will routinely grant permission to the author to use parts of the book in other publications by the author, so long as Duke University and the book are properly acknowledged. Duke University will make certain that all versions of the book as a whole will show the name, academic credentials and affiliation, if appropriate, of the author in a prominent location.

Application Process

Applicants should submit a resume of professional and writing experience, a portfolio of writing examples, three professional references, and a description of any special experience, skills or resources they bring to this project. At least one published book or journal article of comparable nature and magnitude is expected. A proposed budget and a description of the expected extent of other commitments during the contract period should be included.

The deadline for the receipt of proposals is 5:00pm on Friday, August 16, 2002. Other credentials being equal, preference will be given to professional historians of medicine, science or technology. The Duke University Medical Center is an equal opportunity employer.
